Humanities Librarian

Job Description

The University of Texas at San Antonio Library seeks to hire a motivated, service-oriented individual to serve as Humanities Librarian. Reporting to the Head of Electronic Information and Reference Services, this librarian will provide reference assistance and will serve as bibliographer/liaison for academic and research programs in philosophy, religious studies, classics, general humanities, and other humanities areas as assigned. This individual will also participate in library instruction activities. S/he may supervise reference assistants. The normal work schedule is Monday thru Friday with scheduled evening and weekend hours. Travel between campuses will be required.

The UTSA Library is rapidly growing, and the Reference Department is fast-paced and student-centered, meeting student needs both traditionally and through newer virtual methods.

Required Qualifications

An ALA accredited Master's degree in Library or Information Science. Successful practicum or library reference experience and/or teaching experience; a Bachelor's or an advanced degree in the humanities with coursework in philosophy, religious studies, and/or classics; demonstrated knowledge of print and online reference sources and databases; excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; a strong service orientation and the ability to work collegially and productively with diverse groups. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies and environments. Working knowledge of PC-based applications and experience working with an integrated library system.

Preferred Qualifications

Reading knowledge of a foreign language. Library reference experience at an academic institution; experience with the development and presentation of library instruction in the use of electronic and traditional information resources. Collection development experience in the humanities.

Salary: $40,042 (flexible depending on qualifications) for a 12-month appointment. A liberal benefits package and support for professional development is provided.

The Library's goal is to reach Association of Research Libraries membership within the next decade. The Library's integrated library system is Voyager.

San Antonio, currently the seventh largest city in the United States, is a beautiful city, contrasting cosmopolitan progress with a rich multicultural history. The cost of living is low, and cultural and educational opportunities abound. There is no state income tax in Texas.
