WRC 1013 - Research 101 Tutorial

Freshman students enrolled in WRC 1013 & traditional COR 1203 courses will now be able to complete library instruction at their own pace by going through the Library's Research 101 tutorial in WebCT! A web-based version of the tutorial is also available on the Library's website.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do we access the library's WebCT module?

A: Sign into WebCT at http://webct.utsa.edu and click on Library Resources 101.

Q: What does the library's WebCT module contain?

A: Sections of the library's module include:

  • About WebCT
  • Tutorial - Research 101
  • Calendar & Announcements
  • Handouts
  • Contact Us
  • Acknowledgements

You will spend most of your time in the Tutorial - Research 101 section, where you will complete:

  • Six tutorial modules:
    • Basics
    • Information Cycles
    • Topics
    • Searching
    • Finding
    • Evaluating
  • An assessment posttest

Q: How long will it take to complete the tutorial?

A: Approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours, but modules do not have to be completed in a single sitting. The average time it will take to complete each module is approximately 10-15 minutes.

Q: Why do students have to take a pre-test and a post-test?

A: The tests are not meant to be graded, but are the library's way of assessing how well students learn from this new instruction program. Assessing student learning outcomes will also help UTSA satisfy the SACS accreditation standard for Institutional Effectiveness: "The institution identifies expected outcomes for its educational programs and its administrative and educational support services; assesses whether it achieves these outcomes; and provides evidence of improvement based on analysis of those results."

Q: Are students required to complete the tutorial?

A: UTSA library does not require students to complete the tutorial; however we strongly encourage faculty to require students to complete it. Please contact your departments for their requirements.

Q: How do instructors know if a student has completed UTSA Library's WebCT module?

A: For faculty already using WebCT, student completion grades can be uploaded directly into their WebCT grade books. Other instructors may have completion grades emailed to them by contacting us.
