"Women's Studies is a new field of inquiry, beginning only in the late 1960s, but since that time the literature on women and gender-related topics has burgeoned and multiplied....Part of the reason for this is the interdisciplinary nature of women's studies. Women's studies research and writing has taken place in virtually every field of academic endeavor, including each branch of the humanities, the sciences, the social sciences, and the fine arts."
