About Government Documents

Federal Documents

The Government Printing Office (GPO) of the United States is one of the most prolific publishers in the world; information on almost any subject can be found in U.S. government publications. Types of government publications include:

  • primary sources, such as Congressional hearings, legislation, acts and treaties
  • statistical information, such as U.S. Census Reports or the Vital Statistics of the United States
  • agency reports, such as the National Survey on Drug Abuse created by the Department of Health and Human Services
  • reports of special commissions, such as the Attorney General's Commission on Pornography: Final Report, commonly known as the "Meese Report "
  • journals and bulletins, such as Department of State Bulletin or the Survey of Current Business

State and Local Documents

The UTSA Library collects publications issued by Texas state and local governments. These documents are very helpful for local and regional topics, such as the Edwards Aquifer. Examples of these documents include:

  • County Maps of Texas, Department of Highways and Public Transportation
  • Vulnerability of Groundwater to Contamination, Edwards Aquifer Zone, Bexar County, Texas, 1998 San Antonio Water System
  • City of San Antonio Adopted Annual Budget

This library is a Congressionally designated depository for U.S. Government Documents. Public access to the government documents collection is guaranteed by public law. (Title 44 United States Code)
