How does it work? --uses for the Internet

Is there a difference between what we call the Internet and the Web? Although these terms are often used interchangeably, there is a difference between the two.

Internet- the international network of computer networks (the whole thing!)

Web- uses the Internet to display documents (web pages) which contain clickable "hypertext" links that take you to other web pages. These documents may also include graphics or sound.

Other uses for the Internet include:

  • Email
  • Telnet-- Software that allows you to remotely access items that are not web based.
  • FTP(File Transfer Protocol)-- Allows you to remotely access files of information saved on a computer or computer system.
  • Usenet-- A collection of notes (usually emails) on various subjects that are posted to the Internet. Each subject collection of posted notes is known as a newsgroup.Read more about Usenet newsgroups. The Google search engine allows users to search Usenet posts back to 1995!
