Library 101 - Your Guide to Library Resources

Locate Materials

The UTSA Library owns and subscribes to a large number of materials in a wide variety of formats, including --but not limited to-- books, periodicals, videos, government documents, rare books, and electronic databases. Without an organization system, finding a single item among all these resources could be a harrowing experience! To facilitate material location and group related materials together, the library classifies and assigns a specific number to each item.

Library staff formulate classification numbers using the Library of Congress and Superintendent of Documents Classification Systems. To learn more about and view examples of these two classification systems, visit the Call Numbers section of this tutorial.
