Background Information

Allgemeine deutsche Biographie
Location: JPL Reference Stacks CT1053 .A3 1967
An encyclopedia featuring biographies of prominent Germans from the earliest period to the end of the 19th century. This set consists of a 45-volume original set and a 10-volume nachträge or supplemental set, along with a 1-volume general register. The text of this set is printed in fraktur, the classical German lettering style.

Encyclopedia of Contemporary German Culture

Features signed essays by German, European, and U.S.  scholars on post-World War II art, culture, and society in the old West Germany and the new, post-reunification German Federal Republic, as well as East Germany (the former German Democratic Republic), Austria, Switzerland, and other German-speaking regions and communities. Specific subjects include architecture, cultural policies and institutions, economy, education, fashion and design, film, food and drink, literature, mass media and publishing, music, the performing arts, philosophy, religion, and sports and leisure, among many others.

This unique 2-volume encyclopedia set approaches the history and culture of Germany and other German-speaking regions with an interdisciplinary approach, in an attempt to convey and comprehend "the richness of Germany's past, the country's contributions to many fields, and its complex path to the present." Featured are often extensive, signed essays on politics, history, personalities, events, institutions, and issues in such diverse fields as literature, music, art, religion, science, philosophy, economics, technology, media, society, government, and much more. The encyclopedia includes a broad subject guide to the set's contents, as well as a chronology of German history from early unification in 1871 to reunification with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990.

Neue deutsche Biographie

A 20-volume dictionary of German personages, this biographical encyclopedia is a work in progress. At present, it covers only personages with last names beginning with A-through Püt-.

Provides abstracts and/or full text to nearly 6,000 titles relating primarily to news, business, and legal information. Includes U. S. and foreign newspapers, wire services, government and political news, company profiles and financial reports, industry and market news, federal and state case law, law reviews, accounting and tax information, medical news and abstracts, and state and country profiles.
