HarpWeek (UTSA subscription)
Provides electronic access to the complete historical backfile of the journal Harper's Weekly, published between 1857 and 1912. Included are full images of articles from the weekly publication, as well as original advertising and illustrations, providing a comprehensive, week-to-week chronological record of world events and society in the last half of the 19th and the early years of the 20th centuries. Note: It is best to print using the HTML files for this resource, rather than the page images, due to their large size. Otherwise, you will need to download the images to a diskette, then open the page in an image-manipulation program (e.g., Microsoft Photoshop). This book divides its information into decades. Although it includes more text then pictures, it does include some reproductions of ads. Text includes both information about specific companies and information about the time in which they were advertising.

The author of this work polled members of the Business/Professional Advertising Association for their top ads. In the end he compiled a listing of 100 print ads with brief information about the ad and the product.

A two volume series critiquing television ads, print ads, radio spots, and posters. Commentators were judges for the 1999 and 2000 Clio Awards (annual awards honoring creative advertising.)
Superbrands: Marketers of the Year

The first part of this supplement to Brandweek provides biographies for the top marketers of the year. The last section provides company names, their lead advertising agency, brands, media expenditures, and total sales within certain industry categories. The supplement also includes a ranking of the top 2000 brands by media spending.

This project from Duke University provides over 9,000 representative images from 1850-1920. The purpose is to "to make a range of important, interesting, and rare advertising items widely available for study and research, enhancing the usefulness of the illustrative material with essays, a timeline, and bibliographies." Sourcebook of Zip Code Demographics

Contains demographics for every zip code within the United States. In addition to typical demographics, this includes spending potential for a variety of products.
