NARRATOR:
Is an author qualified to write on a certain subject? It may be difficult to tell from just one source. But it's easy to find out more.
1) Look for information online,
NARRATOR:
To find out more about an author, you can look for biographical or professional information online.

2) Look for other publications by the author

NARRATOR:
You can also look for other things written by that same author.

3) Ask for help at the library

NARRATOR:
If you don't find enough to work with, you can ask for help at the library.

The UTSA Libraries have a lot of resources for information on authors.

NARRATOR:
First let's look at an example of searching online.

Just search for the author's name in your favorite search engine.

NARRATOR:
Look for information that indicates the author's background, education, experience, or other areas of knowledge.

NARRATOR:
Look for facts that establish your author as an expert.

Another way to find out more about an author is to find other publications that he or she has written.

NARRATOR:
There are several sites that can help you do this.

Google Books and WorldCat.org are useful for finding books by an author.

You can use Google News if your author is a journalist or reporter.

Google Scholar is helpful if your author writes for academic publications.

NARRATOR:
The Summon search at the UTSA Libraries searches through books, news, and journals. And is an easy way to search through al three.

To do this go to the UTSA Libraries home page and click the advance search link in the Summon Search box. Enter the author's name in the written/created by box. All of the results should be written by your author. Use the Content type options to look at different types of publications.

Google and Summon are basic tools for finding out more about an author. If you need more information, you can always ask a librarian.

You can look for information online through a search engine.

You can also look for other things by that author and several tools including the Summon search at the UTSA Libraries home page.

And if you don't find enough information you can always ask for help at the UTSA libraries.
