WHAT?

The three most popular citation styles are...

 

  • MLA - Used by some humanities scholars
  • APA - Used by many social sciences scholars
  • Chicago - Used by some humanities scholars

WHEN?

You need to cite your sources when you...

 

  • Directly quote someone.
  • Paraphrase someone's ideas.
  • Use another person's data or statistics.

WHERE?

Depending on the citation style, there are 4 ways to include citations in your paper:

WHY?

  • It prevents plagiarism.
  • It helps your reader to locate the sources you used.
  • It gives your work authority.
  • It clarifies which ideas are yours and which ideas came from other authors.

HOW?

Different types of materials require different types of citations.

How do you cite an online article using APA, MLA, and Chicago Style?

APA

Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (Year). Title of article. Title of Journal, Volume Number (Issue Number), Pages. http://dx.doi.org/xx.xxx/yyyyy.

 

MLA

Author. “Title of Source.” Title of Container (Journal Title), Number, Publication Date, Location (Pages). Title of Container (Database Name), Location (DOI or URL).

 

Chicago

Author Last Name, Author First Name. “Title of Article.” Title of Journal, Volume Number, Issue Number (Year): Pages. Stable URL.
