Speaker: Katie Pierce Farrier,
The Carpentries Workshops teach foundational coding and data science skills through hands on exercises. Using a train-the-trainer approach, the Carpentries Workshops empowers students to learn and advocate for efficient, reproducible data practices. Part of the National Library of Medicine’s strategic plan is to build a data-driven workforce and they have offered workshops to encourage librarians to learn much needed data science skills. Workshop curricula includes topics such as R, Python, Bash, cloud computing, and other content used in mathematics, research analysis, and life sciences. I will discuss my journey from being a coding novice, to becoming an instructor, to helping host a Carpentries workshop. Participants will learn about workshop content and structure, how to get involved with the Carpentries and the benefits of hosting their own workshops.
