Meet our Speakers

Dr. Steven Azeka, Program Lead, Responsible Computing Challenge, Mozilla

Dr. Steven Azeka is the program lead for the Responsible Computing Challenge at the Mozilla Foundation, supporting universities in integrating responsible computing principles into core coursework. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Teachers College, Columbia University, and the College of Staten Island, where he trains preservice and in-service teachers to incorporate coding, computational thinking, and responsible AI into their classrooms. Steve's research investigates how new computational bodies of knowledge can be equitably diffused into complex education environments. He previously taught computer science at the elementary and high school levels in California and New York.

Dr. Ziyaad Bhorat, Country Lead, US & South Africa, Responsible Computing Challenge, Mozilla; Global AI Policy, Mozilla

Dr. Ziyaad Bhorat is a South African political theorist focused on automation, AI, responsible technology, and democratic politics. In addition to leading the Mozilla Foundation's Responsible Computing Challenge in the US and South Africa, he is in charge of building Mozilla's global AI policy work in multilateral fora. Ziyaad is also an Associate Director at the Center for Generative AI & Society at the University of Southern California, holding his doctorate in Political Science (Political Theory) from UCLA and his MSc+MBA from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. He has worked in digital media and telecoms industries across Sub-Saharan Africa, publishing on topics ranging from Aristotelian virtue ethics to AI judges.
