More from Dr. Rodriguez:

“My vision for free textbooks in my discipline is to amass a set of research methods readings to support the research development and research foci for Ph.D. students. Using free textbooks in the classroom reiterates to students that books don’t have to have prohibitive costs be influential and effective. I plan to transform my Qualitative Research Traditions course using free textbooks by pairing them with peer-reviewed articles that students can access through UTSA Libraries. Students gain experience understanding the types of writing styles used for textbooks vs. empirical research studies published in journals within the field of educational leadership. Doctoral students and I will benefit from course transformation so that we are learning up to date content that reflects today’s challenges. It is crucial for school and higher education leaders to learn effective ways to integrate qualitative research methods into their research. The course transformation will also benefit doctoral students as they seek research ideas for their dissertations.
