Beatty has replaced the former commercial textbook in all of his sections of MAT1073 with College Algebra from OpenStax. OpenStax, a nonprofit affiliated with Rice University, works directly with faculty subject matter experts and funders like the Hewlett Foundation to create peer-reviewed, openly licensed textbooks that are free for students.
More from Beatty:
"For our MAT 1073 Algebra course, we teach around 2200 students per year (including summer). We have been piloting an open source text along with free class management/homework/quiz software. This has targeted only a few students thus far, but we hope to push this out to all of our sections of the course in the near future. We have spent a great deal of time and energy in adapting the new text and software."
