Kathy Furukawa was a beloved friend, mentor, and wife. After years as a military spouse, she earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1982, which qualified her to pursue and earn a master's degree in library science from the University of Hawaii.
With a passion for learning and helping others learn, Kathy became a medical reference librarian for the Department of Defense until her retirement from the Academy of Health Sciences at Fort Sam Houston. Her community involvement included her service as a VISTA volunteer in West Virginia, a charter member of San Antonio's Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, and an officer and productive member in the Fiber Artists of San Antonio (FASA).
Her fields of interest and passions included fiber arts, library sciences, military quality of life, restorative justice, and social services. Kathy was an adviser and mentor to countless students and their instructors throughout her career, many of whom maintained close contact with her to the end of her life.
To honor her memory, her family and friends are establishing the Kathy Furukawa Memorial Fund at the UTSA Libraries. The fund will help support areas that Kathy cared for deeply. Donations to this Fund will help carry her legacy forward.
